DofE Gold at the Palace

It was a day to celebrate the Duke of Edinburghs Award in its 70th year

The Duke of Edinburghs award has been going for 70 years. As a school we have record numbers taking part in the award. This year there are 106 Year 10 pupils taking part in the Bronze award. There are then 28 pupils in year 12 doing their Gold award. Plus a further 42 pupils finishing off their gold award in Year 13. As a school 23% of Gold students complete their award, and 70% of Bronze participants complete their award.

The DofE award gives pupils the chance to learn new skills, take part in an expedition, do some volunteering and start a new physical activity. At Gold level there is also a residential component for students to complete, which ranges from conservation work in Wales to turtle projects in Sri Lanka.

To celebrate 70 years of DofE there was a special celebration event at Buckingham Palace. This was attended by some pupils who left the school last year, and who have now completed their award; Harriet Foulkes, Lydia Poole, Thomas Webster and Antonia Brown.

Mr Johnson also attended the event at the palace as part of the Gold Celebration event who said; "The overriding message of the day, including from speakers such as Gareth Malone, was of the importance of showing resilience, confidence and teamwork if they are going to be successful in their chosen careers - all core concepts that the DofE program is built upon"

"There was also a talk from a head figure from Amazon in the UK who talked passionately about the importance of things that I don't think we teach in our curriculum, but that all employers are looking for and how important it is that students '...understand the value of teamwork, of communication and problem solving".
